Victor W. Zajec Memorial Scholarship

A non-renewable scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to a junior in good academic standing who exhibits traits of a successful music teacher.

A Chicago native, Victor Zajec (1923-2005) received his B.M.Ed. and M.M.Ed. from VanderCook in 1950 and 1964 respectively, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the college in 1990.  He taught instrument repair and musical acoustics at VanderCook, and held the positions of director of bands and graduate dean.  Zajec served as Secretary of the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic Board of Directors, was a charter member of the Illinois Bandmasters Hall of Fame, chairman of the Edwin Franko Goldman Citation Committee, and chairman of the Sousa Foundation Historic Roll of Honor committee.  Zajec was a nationally known guest conductor and adjudicator. His publications span the musical gamut from teaching to the history of the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic.

"You could count on Vic to do anything. He would do anything for anybody. He would always go the extra mile", said graduate dean Ruth Rhodes (B.M.Ed. 1969), shortly after his passing.
