This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Midwest Clinic and it marks the 70th consecutive performance of the VanderCook College of Music Symphonic Band.  VanderCook, being a co-founding member of the Midwest Clinic is the only ensemble invited to perform at this annual event.  In addition to its traditional Friday concert, over 80 VanderCook students serve as “Blue Vests” and literally ensure that convention logistics are handled.  From set ups for rehearsals and concerts to ushering attendees at concerts and clinics, VanderCook students work tirelessly to make sure attendees have the best experience possible.

The band’s concert will be held from 4:15 to 5:45 pm on Friday, December 16 in Ballroom W375AB of McCormick Place West Convention Center in Chicago.  This year, VanderCook will feature its own Professor Anthony “Tony” Kidonakis as saxophone soloist.  Tony will be featured on Frank Bencrisutto’s Serenade for Solo Alto Saxophone and Band and the second movement “Jack of Spades” from a new work from the Belgian composer Bart Picqueur, Jeu de Cartes.

Guest Conductors for this year’s concert will be Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, nationally known music educator and Dr. Menghini’s first college band director.  Joining Lautzenheiser will be Jerry Hoover, retired director of bands from Missouri State University and Dr. Menghini’s cooperating teacher when he student taught at Jefferson City, Missouri High School in 1976.  Rounding out the conducting panel will be VanderCook alumnus, Brian Logan BMEd ‘83, Professor Stacey Dolan, Associate Director of Bands and Menghini.

The program will also include works by Michael Daugherty, Dana Wilson, Shelley Hanson, Alfred Reed, Richard Saucedo, Robert Sheldon and others.
