When children have access to quality music instruction at an early age, the positive impact is life changing. Unfortunately, too many children from Chicago’s underserved communities never get a chance to play music.

We want to change this with our “One City” Instrumental Music Program.

Classes will be held at VanderCook, 3140 South Federal Street in Chicago, and led by VanderCook faculty and students.

At VanderCook, we teach future music educators to share their passion for music, and we want to share our passion with our Chicago neighbors. We will offer free music lessons and rehearsals, with instruments included, on Saturday mornings for 5th and 6th graders. We will loan students an instrument to use free of charge. Our “One City” Music Program will run for 10-12 weeks each fall and spring.

Any student who completes our “One City” program through 8th grade will keep and own the instrument to play in high school and beyond.

The “One City” program pays tribute to Bronzeville's rich jazz history and offer instruments and lessons from the jazz band family. Instrument choices will include clarinet (sax), trumpet, trombone, percussion (drums), bass and piano. This program will be offered every fall, spring and summer until students complete 8th grade.
