MECA: Level II Intermediate Finale Music Notation

This course is designed for current Finale users who want to get up to speed on the latest time-saving features to help them work more efficiently and increase their productivity. Instructor: Mavis Kallestad Location: Room MIDI Lab.

 

This course is designed for current Finale users who want to get up to speed on the latest time-saving features to help them work more efficiently and increase their productivity. Learn handy editing tools, intuitive shortcuts, and tips and tricks to help create and customize various types of instrumental/choral scores and classroom materials. This course will focus on Finale Educator features that apply to specific areas of teaching. Students will receive hands-on, sequential step-by-step instruction in a Mac lab setting with MIDI keyboards.

Topics include: Review of Simple and Hyperscribe note entry (using a MIDI keyboard), notating musical layers, instrumental score and linked parts layout tips, vocal score and lyrics layout tips, using ScoreManager to control how staves look and sound, plug-ins and metatool shortcuts, scanning tips, percussion notation, lead sheet with chords, staff styles for different notation looks, creating custom worksheets/exercise sheets, recording/ importing an audio track, importing/exporting graphics, using Finale to create SmartMusic practice/assessment files, and sharing your music via other formats (.mp3, .wav or .aiff audio files; exporting MIDI, MusicXML, and .pdf files).
Required text for the course (included with class registration): Building Successful Finale ‘Chops’ by Mavis Kallestad. This text contains tutorials for projects that will be covered in class. Basic knowledge of Finale or PrintMusic software is required. This course is not recommended for beginners. Bring one or two simple projects in your area of interest/teaching to work on.
