Collections N-Z Donald Noonan received his BMEd. from VanderCook College of Music in 1975 and his MMEd from VanderCook College of Music in 1989. This collection includes a manuscript copy of “Supplementary studies in directing,” by H.A. VanderCook, probably in Hubert E. Nutt’s handwriting; a manuscript copy of “God Bless America,” arranged for band by Clarence F. Gates; a manuscript score and parts for “The Duke,” written by Clarence F. Gates for band; 14 black and white photographs of significant VanderCook College of Music people or buildings. 0.448 cubic feet (1 box) Band composer Alfred Reed was born in 1921. He composed over 200 works for concert band, wind ensemble, orchestra, chorus, and chamber ensembles. He succeeded Frederick Fennell as conductor of the Miami University Wind Ensemble. He was elected to the American Bandmasters Association in 1974. Series includes manuscript copies of “Viva Musica!” and “A Christmas Celebration of Songs and Carols.” Alfred Reed died on September 17, 2005. 0.43 cubic feet (1 box)
Dr. Roseanne Rosenthal was President of VanderCook College of Music from 1989-2004. She is currently a member of the teaching faculty. This collection includes workbooks for Methods of Teaching Brass, taught by Victor Zajec; a folder of worksheets written by H.A. VanderCook and H.E. Nutt; and a syllabus for Method of Teaching Strings, taught by Harris V. Bergh. 0.448 cubic feet (1 box) VanderCook College Concert and Recital Collection This is a collection of audio and visual performances of VanderCook ensembles, including band, choir, and string ensembles. The collection also includes student seminars and recitals. Formats include cassette, CD, videotape, and DVD. Printed concert programs are also included. Recordings mostly represent 1990 through the present. The collection can be searched on Horizon, Ruppel Library's online catalog. Recordings can be searched by performer, ensemble, musical work, composer, or year of performance. To retrieve a list of recordings by year, select a Subject Browse search and type "VCM - Recitals and Concerts" Search Ruppel Library's catalog VanderCook College Photograph Collection The VanderCook College of Music Photograph Collection documents the college's history through images of people and events. These include images of VanderCook faculty, staff and students, graduating classes, ensembles and classroom activities. The photos also document various junior and senior high school music ensembles directed by VanderCook personnel, summer camps and workshops. Also included are personal photographs of important individuals in the College's history. The collection includes photographs separated out from the Office of Publications Collection. Photographs are arranged into series according to decade (1920-1929, 1930-1939 and so forth). There are also series for groups of photographs with miscellaneous dates, as well as undated photographs. Additional series include the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic photographs. 7.737 cubic feet (30 boxes) VanderCook College Student Life Collection This collection documents the history of student life and activities at VanderCook College of Music. Series include photographs, course-related materials, publications and compositions, audiovisual materials, and student organizations. 1.305 cubic feet (5 boxes) VanderCook College Student, Alumni and Faculty Papers This collection contains the papers of individuals associated with VanderCook College of Music, particularly as these materials pertain to their activities while attending or teaching at the college. Series include course materials, class projects, publications or compositions, student papers, alumni papers, and faculty papers. This collection includes materials of Forrest L. Buchtel, Sr., Michael Pendowski, Dennis Northway, Marc Jacoby, Harry Lemert, Stuart Baumann, George Stanley, Clifford P. Lillya, and George R. Borich. 2.329 cubic feet (10 boxes)
Gilbert Edwin Wilson was born in Girard, Ohio on June 10, 1914. He received his B.S. in Education from Southeast Missouri State Teachers College in 1942 and his M.M.Ed. from VanderCook College of Music in 1949. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Conservatory of Music, University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1969. His dissertation on Hale A. VanderCook was later published by VanderCook College of Music as “H.A. VanderCook the Teacher.” This is the definitive biography of VanderCook. Gilbert Wilson was a conductor of band, orchestra and choral organizations at both the high school and college levels. He was an assistant professor of instrumental music at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois and Associate Professor of Instrumental Music at Peru State College in Peru, Nebraska. He died on August 7, 2004 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Series include: oral history interviews with Forrest L. Buchtel, Sr., Haskell Harr, Hubert E. Nutt, Joe Roberts, John H. Beckerman, Richard E. Paul Van Buskirk Yoder was born in Tacoma, Washington on October 8, 1908. He received a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of North Dakota. Yoder also completed coursework at VanderCook College of Music. He was regarded as the “Dean of American band composers,” composing over 1,500 original compositions and arrangements. He was also called the “father of bands” in Japan, and “America’s musical ambassador” for his international work as a conductor, adjudicator and clinician. His work with schools and band camps had a profound impact on the growth of the school band movement in America. He received hundreds of honors and awards throughout his career, which spanned more than sixty years. He was an Honorary Life Member and Past President of the American Bandmasters Association. He contributed more than 40 years of service to the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, including serving on its Board of Directors. He died in Hendersonville, North Carolina on April 4, 1990. Series includes the manuscript for his composition "Haskell’s Rascals," a snare drum trio with band accompaniment composed in tribute to Haskell Harr. 0.379 cubic feet (1 box) |
