Sure on this shining night,by Samuel Barber is a choral arrangement of Barber's art song of the same name, Opus 13, no. 3. The text is an excerpt of James Agee’s (1909-1955) poem “Description of Elysium” published in Permit Me Voyage in 1934. Much of the melodic material is set in canon, wherein voices follow one another with the same melodic contour. The canon creates an interesting effect as the frequent “sh” sounds and other consonants echo across the ensemble.
