“Rhythms and Riffs” byBrian Balmages (1975)
Conducted by Victoria Shoemaker
Victoria Shoemakergrew up in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, in a community of musicians that fostered her love for flute and music in every form. She is continuously inspired and encouraged by her parents, Chuck and Ginny Shoemaker, and her younger brother Doug. Her teachers have had the biggest influence in her growth as a musician and person, leading her to pursue her bachelor of music education degree at VanderCook College of Music.
Brian Balmages wrote the piece “Rhythms and Riffs” as an exercise in counting and dynamics. His main objective was to teach the ensemble how to count independently and work together to create a dynamic piece that creates a groove like a drum set, and the sound of an intricate melody through simple dynamic contrasts and contextual color differences. See if you can follow the heart beat rhythms through the ensemble as they perform “Rhythms and Riffs” by Brian Balmages.
