Verleih’ uns Friedenis a chorale cantata composed by Felix Mendelssohn in 1831. Mendelssohn’s original intent was to base the piece on a hymn written to the same text by Martin Luther, but he ended up creating an entirely new melody. Mendelssohn composed it to pay homage to the religious paintings by Titian in the Venice church he attended. The text, from the Agnus Dei portion of a Catholic service, translates to: “Give peace, O Lord, in our time; because there is no one else who will fight for us if not You, our God.”
