“Country Dance” from Cajun Folk Songs II by Frank Ticheli (b. 1958)
Conducted by Paul Cepela
Paul Cepela is originally from Park Forest, Illinois and currently resides in Crest Hill, Illinois. Being a homeschooled student with no real band background it was not until attending Joliet Junior College that he was inspired to teach music by the outstanding faculty at that institution. Since coming to VanderCook Paul has been the chapter president of the National Band Association, an active member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, served on the student senate, and works in the Ruppel Memorial Library. Paul has been awarded with numerous awards at both Joliet Junior College and VanderCook College of Music and plans on continuing this same attitude in his educational, teaching, and performing career.
Country Dance is a song built on original music that creates the dance feel of a Cajun two-step with a middle section based on two pentatonic folk songs. The piece was written in 1996 and celebrated the birth of the Frank Ticheli's nephew. It was premiered in 1997 by the Indiana All-State Band under the direction of Allan McMurray, who originally commissioned the work.
