Obituary – Lewis A. Schmidt

Lewis Alan Schmidt, 80, of Elkhart Lake, passed away unexpectedly in rural Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016. 

Lew was born in Pennsylvania on June 7, 1936, son of the late Clarence and Mary (Deerhake) Schmidt.

Lew attended Plymouth High School, received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Lakeland College in 1958, and his Master of Music Education degree from VanderCook College of Music (VCM) Chicago, Illinois in 1963. In 1993 he was awarded the Doctor of Music Arts degree (honoris causa) from VCM and in 2002 was elected to the College’s Board of Trustees. 

He married Geraldine Matzinger on June 7, 1958, and they moved to Cazenovia, Wisconsin, where began his teaching career at Weston High School.

In 1959, he took the position of Band Director in Spring Green, Wisconsin, and in 1962, assumed the responsibilities of Director of Bands at the new River Valley High School. Over the course of his 25 year tenure at River Valley he served as coordinator and supervisor of music curriculum and instruction in the River Valley school system and built a K -12 program of excellence that touched and shaped hundreds of lives. In 1982, he accepted the position as Professor of Music Education and Conductor of Bands at Lakeland College in Plymouth, Wisconsin; he retired from that position in 1998. While at Lakeland College he became the Director of the Kiel Municipal Band, a position he held until 2015.

As a field representative of the Wisconsin School Music Association he served as an adjudicator and consultant at district and state festivals. Recognized as one of Wisconsin’s leading music educators, Dr. Schmidt has received numerous awards including, the Phi Beta Mu Outstanding Bandmaster Award; National Band Association Citation of Excellence (Wisconsin Chapter - 1979 and 1987); the Wisconsin Music Education Association’s Distinguished Service Award; Sudler Scroll Award and the Diploma of the Order of Merit; Historical Roll of Honor by the John Philip Sousa Foundation; and holds a place on the Ted Lins Wall of Fame for Distinguished Service to the Community (Spring Green, Wisconsin) and to the River Valley School District.

Lew was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Kiel and a member of the Mendelssohn Choir. He was an avid reader, often volunteering at the local libraries to read to young children, and had a great interest in WWII events. A sports enthusiast, he loved to golf and passionately followed the Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers.

Lew was the second of four children, preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lawrence and Phillip Schmidt; and sister in law Sylvia Schmidt. He is survived by his sister Judith (Schmidt) Walkenhorst, daughter Lynn (Enrico) Musco of DeLand, Florida, and their son Alex Cholka of Chicago, Illinois; daughter Laurie Schmidt and Darin Grobe of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and son Scott (Suzi) Schmidt of Mazomanie, Wisconsin.  

Memorial services for Lew will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m. at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Kiel, Wisconsin, with Lay Minister Mike Mathes officiating. Visitation will be at the church from 4 p.m. on Tuesday until the time of services. Cremation has taken place. 

Memorial services will also be held on Friday, Nov. 25 from 1 until 5 p.m. at Arthur’s Supper Club in Spring Green, Wisconsin. Sharing of memories and stories will take place at 2:30 p.m.

Obituary – Geraldine A. Schmidt

Geraldine Ann Schmidt, age 79 of Elkhart Lake, passed away unexpectedly in rural Elkhart Lake, WI on 11-16-16. Gerry was born in Belleville, WI on August 16, 1937, daughter of Ernest and Anna (Kehrli) Matzinger.

Gerry attended Belleville High School and Lakeland College. On June 7, 1958 she married Lewis A. Schmidt. She held positions at Bank of Spring Green, First Interstate Bank Sheboygan, and Lakeland College, retiring in 1999. In more recent years Gerry volunteered at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ-Kiel WI, Rocky Knoll Nursing Home and Blue Cross.

Gerry was a member of St Peter’s United Church of Christ-Kiel, a member of the Mendelssohn Choir and the Chapel Chimers Bell Choir. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and was an avid blood donor totaling over 16 gallons to date. She enjoyed gardening and cooking. Probably most notable was her direct participation and involvement in her husband Lew’s career of music education. Gerry taught piano lessons, and was the pianist/accompanist for hundreds of student recitals and solo/ensemble competitions from 1960 to present.

Gerry was an only child, and is survived by daughter Lynn (Enrico) Musco of Deland FL and their son Alex Cholka Chicago, IL, daughter Laurie Schmidt and Darin Grobe of Milwaukee, WI, and son Scott (Suzi) Schmidt of Mazomanie, WI. Gerry was preceded in death by her parents and special uncle Arnold Kehrli. Gerry is survived by many other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday evening (November 22, 2016) at 6pm at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Kiel, WI with Lay Minister Mike Mathes officiating.   Visitation will be at the Church from 4:00P.M. on Tuesday until the time of Services. Cremation has taken place.
