Applied Clarinet
Mr. Refsnider joined the faculty of VanderCook College in the fall of 2007 and currently serves as director of continuing education and instructor of clarinet. He previously taught at Roseburg High School in Roseburg, Oregon, where he led the Roseburg Indian Marching Band to consecutive finals appearances in regional Northwest Marching Band Circuit competitions. Mr. Refsnider received his master of music in clarinet performance from the University of Notre Dame, where he also served as an ensemble director and private studio instructor and was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Student Teacher Award for Excellence in Teaching. He received his bachelor of music education from VanderCook College of Music. Mr. Refsnider is currently an active clinician and instructor for marching bands in the Northern Illinois and Northwest Indiana regions.
As a clarinet student at VanderCook, you will join a studio of talented and motivated musicians in a great learning environment that encourages your creative abilities. You will work with me privately on the clarinet to develop the foundation of good musicianship – a beautiful sound, clear articulation, and solid technique. Clarinet students at VanderCook complete a thorough curriculum of etudes, exercises and orchestral excerpts as well as studying masterpieces of the solo and chamber repertoire. You will discover great historical clarinetists of the past through listening exercises and expressive studies. The clarinet studio employs recent technological innovations to enhance your study and preparation of literature. You will enjoy a full schedule of performance opportunities and, together, we will help you realize your potential as a musician and educator.
