Applied Horn
"From the first time I heard my high school band perform, I knew I wanted to make music my career. The band's sound was so powerful and expressive...something new to me. Over the years, I have found that the moments in music for the horn's unique sound are like no others. I have found great pleasure in passing along that same joy I have experienced with the horn."

Horn playing usually has a good deal of mystique attached to it. I take a different, simple approach to the instrument that brings forward musicality and lyricism as the cornerstone of your playing. In your weekly applied horn lessons, you will have the chance to develop your fundamental brass-playing skills, enhance your technique through etude study, and learn the beautiful horn literature that will deepen your musical skills.
As a horn player at VanderCook, you will be welcomed into the many ensembles: Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Philharmonic Orchestra and the many chamber music groups...all of which offer opportunities to learn standard and contemporary literature and to gain valuable playing experience. The horn students at VanderCook are a diverse, congenial group who often work together on their music. This rapport helps to create a strong horn section in the performing groups of which you will be a part. Whatever your background or experience, you will quickly find a place here that needs you.
Are you thinking about becoming a music teacher? If so, I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have about teaching music. I'd also love to chat with you about what VanderCook has to offer and what you can expect if you choose to study horn here. Feel free to contact me at pjirousek@vandercook.edu for more information.
