"Since childhood I knew I would always love music. Sharing music with students who will in turn introduce it to their students is something that gives me true pleasure."

Life at VanderCook

During your time at VanderCook, you and I will work together once a week in private lessons. Our focus in these lessons will be threefold. First, we will concentrate on technique (playing with good sound, good intonation, shifting smoothly, etc). Second, we will concentrate on musicality (playing with good phrasing, shaping the mood of a piece, preparing for performance, etc). These first two areas of concentration will help us to realize your potential as a performer. The third area of our focus will be to show you how to relay these concepts to your own students.

The repertoire we will work on will be varied. We will look at orchestral repertoire, both the pieces you will work on in your VanderCook ensembles and standard excerpts. We will also work on solo bass works and modern repertoire and possibly electric bass, improvisation, or composition! I encourage students to contact me between lessons with any questions they have. The bass studio is very supportive and will be with you every step of the way through your VanderCook education. I hope you will join us.

Are you thinking about becoming a music teacher? If so, I'd be happy to answer any questions you may have about teaching music. I'd also love to chat with you about what VanderCook has to offer and what you can expect if you choose to study bass here. Feel free to contact me at dbistrow@vandercook.edu for more information.
