Assistant or Associate Professor of Music or Music Education

VanderCook College of Music seeks a highly motivated music educator to continue to build and develop a nationally recognized band program at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The band program, and instrumental music education in particular, are integral parts of VanderCook’s curriculum.  The ideal candidate is able to recruit students, enhance the public profile of the ensemble and College, and provide a unique vision for the future of this historic program. This is a full time position (fall and spring semesters and 6-week summer session) to begin August, 2019.
Responsibilities
1. Build and oversee an outstanding band program at VanderCook College of Music. Current ensembles include the Symphonic Band and Summer Graduate Band.

2. Maintain an active schedule of outreach work, e.g., visiting high school band programs, and assisting with on-site programs, with the explicit goal of recruiting students to VanderCook’s BMEd and MMEd degree programs.

3. Cultivate and maintain a positive relationship with the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic so that VanderCook continues its historic and significant presence at this event.

4. Assist in developing outstanding continuing education courses in band education for current music educators.

5. Teach coursework in areas of expertise during the fall, spring and summer sessions.

6. Work collaboratively and imaginatively with other members of the college’s community to support VanderCook’s mission.

Qualifications
1. An innovative, imaginative spirit that seeks to help future music educators develop the skills needed to be effective leaders in 21st century schools.

2. Experienced, successful leadership as a college or high school band director.

3. Expertise in band literature, conducting, and instrumental music pedagogy.

4. Energy and ability to motivate student musicians to achieve their highest level of musicianship.

5. Excellent organizational, administrative and interpersonal skills.

6. A doctorate is preferred. Candidates with a master’s degree and significant professional experience will be considered.
